In 2024, Goldberg made an appearance at WWE Bad Blood, where he confronted Gunther in a heated exchange. Their intense face-off led to security stepping in to separate them.
Following that encounter, Goldberg announced his return to WWE in 2025 for his retirement match. Speculation has been high about his final opponent, with many believing Gunther could be the one to face him.
With speculation high on who Goldberg’s final opponent will be. The WWE Hall of Famer recently spoke about never sharing the ring with John Cena. Cena, who is also on his retirement tour, is set to hang up his boots at the end of the year.
Despite Goldberg facing top WWE stars such as Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, The Undertaker, and Kevin Owens since his 2016 return. Fans never got to see him square off against the 16-time WWE World Champion John Cena. As Goldberg prepares for retirement, he reflects on how exciting it would have been to face Cena in a match.
Goldberg opens up on a potential match with John Cena
In an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg reflected on never facing John Cena and admitted that it would have been exciting to step into the ring with him. He stated, “I never got a chance to get my hand around Cena’s throat. That might have been cool. There are a lot of people I would have loved to have faced back in the day, but the fact is, what does that do for the business now? A lot of people don’t even remember me that watch wrestling right now. A lot of people don’t know me because they speak negatively of me. I think I was an innovator of sorts. While discussing a potential match with John Cena, Goldberg also mentioned the possibility of a rematch with Roman Reigns or facing rising star Bron Breakker. With his retirement match approaching, it will be interesting to see who he faces in his final bout.
