For years, fans have wanted to see WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin face CM Punk. As one of WWE’s all-time greats, Austin led the company during the Monday Night Wars against WCW and played a key role in WWE’s victory in the ratings battle.
After being the face of the WWE for several years, in 2003, Austin wrestled his final match against The Rock at WrestleMania 19 and announced his retirement. He made occasional WWE appearances over the years until 2022, when he returned for one more match.
At WrestleMania 38, Austin headlined The Kevin Owens Show. When Owens challenged him to a match, Austin accepted on the spot. He stepped into a WWE ring for the first time in 19 years and defeated Owens with a Stunner.
CM Punk returned to WWE in 2023, reigniting fan interest in a match between him and Austin. Their on-screen interaction in 2011 and 2012 sparked excitement about a potential match, and the demand has only grown since.
Both Austin and Punk share a close mutual friend. When Punk returned, Austin sent him a congratulatory text, something Punk revealed a few months ago. Austin, who is from Las Vegas, and WrestleMania 41, which is set to take place there in April, has now addressed whether he would step into the ring with Punk.
Stone Cold reveals his thoughts on facing CM Punk
Speaking on The Adrian Hernandez Show, Austin discussed his relationship with CM Punk. He stated, “Oh, me and Punk are friends from way back, there was a picture back from probably in my heyday. And he’s a lot younger than I am, and we got a picture there together, and he’s just a young kid. And so I think he was a Stone Cold fan back in the day, and I’m a CM Punk fan. I’m a fan of his work and his promos Jesus Christ he can light somebody up.”
He continued, “So we don’t talk a whole lot. We’ll send each other a text every now and then but we’re probably really, really good friends that don’t talk a whole lot and have a lot of mutual respect for each other.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]
Austin admitted to many great opponents when talking about a potential dream match. However, he acknowledged that Punk would definitely be among them. He stated, “Oh man, there is so many potential great matches I’d have to draw a blank stare and think for a couple of minutes. But would he be on the list? Of course.”
Stone Cold Steve Austin confirmed he will be in Las Vegas during WrestleMania 41 in April, but stated that he hasn’t discussed an appearance with WWE. Since he named CM Punk as a potential dream opponent, it remains to be seen if this match will become a reality at WrestleMania 41. Only time will tell.
