WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio Drops Update About His Retirement Plans

Three-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio has revealed a major update on his retirement. Mysterio, one of the greatest high-flyers in professional wrestling history, has dominated the industry for over three decades.

Rey Mysterio began his career in the early ’90s before gaining global recognition in WCW, where he revolutionized wrestling with his lucha libre style. He joined WWE in 2002 and quickly became a fan favorite with his underdog gimmick.

Mysterio’s biggest moment came in 2006 when he won the Men’s Royal Rumble. He then went on to capture the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22 by defeating Kurt Angle and Randy Orton.

Mysterio didn’t just make a name for himself in WWE; he thrived outside the promotion as well. After nearly three years away, Mysterio made a triumphant return at the 2018 Royal Rumble, receiving a massive ovation. Since then, he has continued to deliver top performances in WWE.

In 2023, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023. Now, at 50 years old, Mysterio has provided a major update on his retirement plans from professional wrestling.

Rey Mysterio opens up about his final match in WWE: What fans can expect

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio recently appeared on Adrian Hernandez of Unlikely, where he was asked about John Cena’s approach to retirement. Cena had previously stated that 2025 would be his final year in WWE. Mysterio was asked whether he planned to announce his last match or quietly step away from the ring.

He stated, “I would love to make an announcement. I would love for the fans who have grown up watching me and supported my career from day one, of which there are still many around, to be able to say, ‘This is the last time I’m going to get to see him perform. I want to go take a look.’ I want to give the opportunity to those fans that have been loyal from day one. Prior to that, I would think, ‘I’m just going to retire one day,’ but it’s a hard thing to do when you start thinking about it.”

He continued, “I know that time is a lot closer than it was yesterday. I have to prep myself up mentally. I do that slowly, especially now that Cena is doing his last run. I’m kind of looking at him and trying to get that understanding of what it feels like. He’s going into Hollywood and doing his thing, he has a great thing going on. For me, I’ve always loved and only done wrestling. Once I leave wrestling, I think about what I’m going to do next.” [H/T: Fightful]

At 50, Rey Mysterio seems to be considering retiring on a high note from professional wrestling. It will be interesting to see who his final opponent will be, as many fans hope it will be his son, Dominik Mysterio.
