Recent reports indicate that Tony Khan is eyeing a former WWE Superstar for AEW. Since its inception in 2019, AEW has made a significant mark in the professional wrestling world.
Initially, AEW was built around The Elite, consisting of Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, and Hangman Page, who served as the company’s pillars. In its first year, AEW also signed Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, Pac, Darby Allin, and MJF, all of whom contributed to its success.
Over time, AEW expanded its roster by signing several former WWE Superstars, including Adam Cole, Bryan Danielson, Christian Cage, Malakai Black, and Adam Copeland. AEW also brought CM Punk back to wrestling after seven years.
While Punk’s time in AEW did not go as planned due to backstage altercations, AEW successfully developed several stars in its early years. However, in the past year, AEW has struggled with fan attendance and declining TV ratings.
Despite consistently delivering impressive matches, the promotion has struggled to maintain its initial connection with fans. Now, amid these challenges, reports suggest Tony Khan is planning to sign former WWE Superstar Matt Cardona formerly known as Zack Ryder.
Report: AEW interested in signing Matt Cardona
Matt Cardona, who was released from WWE in 2020, has built a strong reputation in the independent wrestling scene over the years. In fact, Cardona has made several appearances in All Elite Wrestling. He has never signed an official contract with Tony Khan’s promotion. Recently, Cardona debuted on Ring of Honor (ROH), AEW’s sister promotion.
He challenged Chris Jericho for the ROH World Championship at Final Battle. Now, the latest reports suggest that Tony Khan may be preparing to offer him a more significant deal.
Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio mentioned that Cardona’s recent appearance and a possible match with Jericho could be a sign that AEW is considering a contract offer. Also, Meltzer noted the outcome of his match with Jericho may be a key factor in any potential signing. Thus, if Cardona wins, it is likely that Tony Khan would only proceed with the storyline if he is under contract.
