Former WWE World Champion Rey Mysterio is one of the most recognizable faces in the professional wrestling world. Recently, the WWE Hall of Famer shared his thoughts on the progress of his son, Dominik Mysterio over the past few years.
Dominik Mysterio, who made his WWE debut in 2020, was involved in a storyline featuring the Mysterio family and Seth Rollins, which culminated in a match at SummerSlam against Rollins. Following his debut, Dirty Dom was paired with his father in the tag team division. Their duo went on to become the first father and son to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.
Dominik Mysterio who started as a fresh babyface, often found himself in the shadow of his father. However, things took a dramatic turn in his career. In 2022, at WWE Clash at the Castle, Dominik Mysterio shockingly betrayed his father, Rey Mysterio, by aligning himself with The Judgment Day.
The heel turn proved to be a game-changer for Dominik Mysterio. It not only allowed him to distance himself from Rey Mysterio’s legacy. The embrace of his new persona quickly established himself as one of WWE’s top heels. He showcased his abilities and drew significant fan interest in his heel persona. This move also allowed him to explore new storylines and rivalries that helped him develop his character.
Although Rey and Dominik currently do not see eye to eye due to their conflicting paths, Rey has openly expressed his pride in his son’s growth. Recently, he acknowledged that he always believed his son would eventually surpass him.
Why did Rey Mysterio believe Dominik Mysterio would outshine him?
WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio recently appeared on Busted Open Radio, where he discussed his son’s remarkable growth in WWE. Mysterio expressed how Dominik has not only met but exceeded expectations by achieving things that Mysterio himself never accomplished.
He stated, “I’ve always known, deep down inside my heart that my son was going to be bigger than his father. I didn’t know in what way. But I just knew that he was going to do things that I wasn’t able to do and he was going to take it to the next level. That’s what generations are about, taking it to the next level… He’s doing it and he’s surprising all of us, his family, his peers, the fans. When you grow up in your first four years of being in the business around that type of superstardom, if you don’t learn, I don’t know how you’re going to learn. He picked up on it.”
Although father and son have been crossing paths for the past few months, Dominik Mysterio recently achieved a significant milestone by defeating his father for the first time in a singles match.
