AEW star Will Ospreay recently disclosed that former WWE Champion AJ Styles contacted him last year. Ospreay joined AEW in November, when the promotion announced him as their new signee. Being one of the most sought-after free agents last year, both WWE and AEW competed to sign him.
In the end, he opted for AEW over WWE. However, Ospreay recently revealed that his good friend from WWE, AJ Styles, had reached out to him during his free agency. Will Opsreay revealed on the AEW Unrestricted podcast that Styles attempted to convince him to sign with WWE. He stated, “AJ was on the phone to me when he was trying to, I guess the right word would be ‘sway’ in making my decision on which company I should (sign with). And it flatters me because AJ is my hero, everything I wanted to become.”
He continued by saying, “I feel like he’s always kept an eye on me. I feel like even now, I guess that’s what the phone call was about, but he always keeps an eye on me every now and again but for me, coming (to AEW) was the right thing to do. I just knew coming here, I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to be part of a change in the culture.”
While Ospreay’s choice of AEW will be debatable, it appears he is having a lot of fun in AEW. Recently, at AEW Dynasty, he had one of the best matches in wrestling history with Bryan Danielson. The match received huge praise from the fans.
Will Ospreay and AJ Styles set for huge matches this month
Even though AJ Styles and Will Ospreay are in separate promotions, they are both scheduled for important matchups this month. This weekend at WWE Backlash in France, AJ Styles will square off against Cody Rhodes for the WWE Undisputed Championship.
Meanwhile, Will Opsreay won the casino gauntlet match last week on AEW Dynamite. As a result, Ospreay gets to battle Roderick Strong for the AEW International Championship. The match is scheduled at AEW Double or Nothing in Las Vegas on May 26.
