WWE Superstar John Cena is at the center of speculation regarding his status for WrestleMania 40. Following his last match at WWE Crown Jewel 2023, Cena faced a dominant loss to Solo Sikoa, marked by 11 Samoan Spikes. After bidding a near-tearful farewell to fans after Crown Jewel, Cena hinted at retirement and has been absent from WWE TV since.
As the road to WrestleMania 40 kicks off with the Royal Rumble this weekend, fans are eager to know if the Cenation leader will grace the grandest stage this year. John Cena, however, keeps fans in suspense about his potential appearances at WrestleMania 40.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cena weighed in on a possible WrestleMania 40 appearance, stating, “I don’t know if I’ll be free that weekend, but it is a weekend and movies don’t shoot on the weekends. But when I say I’m done — in WWE, they say never say never and a lot of people retire and come back — I’m just being honest with myself. There’s such a great new generation now as well. It’s time to pass the electric energy on to the folks that can be there every day.”
It’s worth noting that Cena did compete at WrestleMania 39 last year, facing Austin Theory and experiencing defeat in the US title match.
Potential match for John Cena at WrestleMania 40
John Cena, who hasn’t appeared on WWE TV since his loss to Solo Sikoa at Crown Jewel in November, teased retirement; however, he hasn’t officially announced that he is hanging up his boots. With WrestleMania 40 approaching, the question arises: who will Cena face in Philadelphia if he makes an appearance?
It seems like WWE could opt for a Legends match, with John Cena facing one of his greatest rivals, Randy Orton. Orton, who recently appeared on WWE’s The Bump show, stated that he wanted to face Cena at WrestleMania, as they have never had a singles match on the grandest stage of them all. John Cena even responded to this by posting a picture of The Viper on his Instagram account.
It’s noteworthy that Orton faced Cena at WrestleMania 24 in a triple-threat match, where Orton defeated Cena and Triple H to retain his WWE Championship.
