Recently, AEW World Champion MJF dropped a bombshell regarding his contract status as it inches closer to expiration. MJF, known for his cocky demeanor and heel tactics, has been teasing a bidding war among wrestling promotions for the last few years. His AEW deal is set to conclude on January 1, 2024.
On many occasions, the AEW World Champion teased the bidding war for 2024. He even made references to WWE’s Nick Khan and Triple H, stating that they are, in fact, interested in him. He also mentioned this during the Double or Nothing post-show press conference.
Speaking on the SI Media podcast, MJF disclosed that, despite expressing his desire to remain with the promotion, he has not yet signed a new deal with AEW.
“I’ve been saying the same thing (about my contract expiration date). I never lied. January 1st, 2024. When stuff like that gets leaked out, it makes me laugh because I remember something leaked out about Cody (Rhodes) having secretly re-signed and then he showed up (in WWE). Something got leaked out about, you know, CM Punk and Tony Khan or you know… I think fans leak out things that they want to be true. I love AEW, I wanna stay in AEW. After this pay-per-view (Worlds End), it’s time to assess the situation for a professional setting. So… not yet (I haven’t re-signed),” He said.
Recently, AEW stars, such as Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, Jade Cargill, and Lexi King, have moved to WWE. Will MJF be the next top star to switch promotions? Only time will tell.
What MJF’s AEW contract update means for his future
MJF’s recent confirmation that he has not yet re-signed with AEW brings up an interesting question about his future.
Currently, MJF is set to defend his AEW World Championship at Worlds End in Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on December 30, hours before his contract expires. Meanwhile, he has mentioned numerous times that on January 1, 2024, he will become a free agent.
As Maxwell defends his world title, it becomes intriguing to observe if he can secure its retention. To retain it, Tony Khan will need to present a compelling offer to ensure his continued commitment to AEW.
