Netflix has acquired the first run streaming rights for British competition series, The Great British Bake Off. The new series will be available on the streamer on August 31 with upcoming seasons all set to be released on Netflix. The second batch of episodes (Netflix collection 6, which is UK season 9) will arrive last this year, a nd in fall 2019 (Netflix collection 7, which is UK season 10).
Known in the U.K. as The Great British Baking Show, Bake Off had to switch networks from BBC to Chanel 4, which means that the first season with new hosts Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, alongside new judge Prue Leith will be the first season to stream on Netflix.
When the show jumped networks the only judge to follow the baking show was Paul Hollywood. Some fans of the show didn’t appreciate the change, however the overall ratings of the show didn’t seem to be effected as the competition garnered an average of 10 million viewers a week and stayed in the top 5 shows in the U.K.
Netflix has always had some Bake Off episodes stored away, but were incumbent on PBS airing the episodes first. Now with this new deal, Netflix will be the only company able to stream the show in the US.
