Netflix has announced the pick up of Madame C.J. Walker, a new limited series that will star Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water, The Help) as the influential philanthropist and entrepreneur. Spencer will be starring and executive producing the limited series.
This is the untold and highly irreverent story of black hair care pioneer and mogul Madam C.J. Walker and how she overcame hostile turn-of-the-century America, epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and some trifling family to become America’s first black, self-made female millionaire. The story will be based on the biography On Her Own Ground by A’Lelia Bundles, Madam C.J. Walker’s great-great-granddaughter.
The limited series will run for eight episodes, the first of which will bee directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou, Talk to Me). Janine Sherman Barrois (Criminal Minds, Claws) and Elle Johnson will showrun the series
Madam C.J. Walker is executive produced by Octavia Spencer, Kasi Lemmons, LeBron James, Maverick Carter of SpringHill Entertainment, and Mark Holder and Christine Holder from Zero Gravity.
