Jack Quaid has landed a role in one of gaming’s biggest franchises. The actor, best known for playing Hughie in The Boys, will voice a peculiar new character in the recently announced PlayStation title from Santa Monica Studio.
Jack Quaid cast as Phranque in God of War Laufey
Quaid voices Phranque, a sentient cosmic cube. Sony describes the character as a “curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition,” adding that “he will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen.”
Viewers immediately recognized Quaid’s voice in the new trailer. Now, the cube’s comedic yet sincere personality has already generated considerable discussion online. The role continues a busy period for the actor, whose recent work spans Oppenheimer, Novocaine, and his acclaimed role as Hughie Campbell in The Boys.
Jack Quaid’s Phranque is not merely comic relief in God of War Laufey. Creative director Cory Barlog stressed the character’s narrative significance, revealing that the cube survived every iteration of the game’s development. “It has been part of the iterations of this since the very beginning. Phranque has been carried over through every single aspect of this,” Barlog told IGN. “To me it’s one of the most important parts of it. Strip away all of the fanciful and the design and the extra and what you have is this very simple cube, but you imbue inside of it an incredible struggle as well as an earnestness and a real personality.”
Faye does not travel alone. The sword she wields in combat is first discovered lodged inside Phranque, and pulling it free introduces Rue. She is an “enchanted ribbon guardian” voiced by Lau. Rue is determined to keep the weapon from falling into the wrong hands, and the three characters form what the developers describe as an unusual partnership.
Narrative director Matt Lawrence hopes players will connect with the unlikely trio in God of War Laufey. “I hope by the end of this, everybody has feelings for some ribbons and a jellied cube,” he said.
