Marvel Turned Daredevil: Born Again’s Original Pilot Into Episodes 2 & 3

Though the first three episodes of Daredevil: Born Again have garnered positive responses from critics and audiences alike, original plans for the series would have seen a different opening to the show. Premiering earlier this month, Born Again re-introduced fans to Charlie Cox’s masked vigilante seven years after the conclusion of Netflix’s Daredevil. However, as per recent statements from series director Michael Cuesta, Marvel had initially planned for Episodes 2 and 3 to be the starting point of Born Again.

How Daredevil: Born Again’s pilot changed during production

In a recent discussion, Michael Cuesta revealed that Marvel primarily recruited him to helm the first and second episodes of the new Disney+ series. However, with the show going through several creative changes prior to its release, a separate pilot was ultimately made to kickstart Daredevil: Born Again.

During his recent appearance on Brandon Davis’ Phase Hero podcast, Cuesta delved into how he ended up working in the MCU. While explaining what motivated him to take up such a complex project, he revealed that he was initially brought in to direct the first two episodes of the series. “It came to me from the producers and the writers. It was the first two episodes originally,” Cuesta noted.

Cuesta then expressed hesitation over divulging more information but ultimately elaborated more after Davis reassured him that everyone was aware of the creative overhaul that Born Again has gone through.

Cuesta’s statements suggest that fans wouldn’t have got to see Charlie Cox don his iconic suit in the original Daredevil: Born Again pilot. Additionally, viewers would have also missed the death of Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Daredevil’s brawl with Bullseye, as well as the intense conversation between Cox’s Matt Murdoch and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk.

Daredevil: Born Again has so far premiered its first three episodes, with the remaining six scheduled to come out on Disney+ every other Tuesday.
