After so many decades, an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit TV series is finally in development with Iron Man director Jon Favreau on board as both writer and producer under Walt Disney Studios.
The project will be a hybrid of animation and live-action, focusing on Walt Disney’s classic irreverent and self-absorbed character. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is a pivotal character for the Walt Disney Company and served as a catalyst for the creation of the world’s most famous cartoon character.
Disney created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in 1927, featuring in the company’s 27 animated shorts through 1928. When Universal took control of the character, Disney decided to create a character who shares an uncanny resemblance to Oswald: Mickey Mouse. The character went on to become Disney’s mascot.
Who’s behind Oswald the Lucky Rabbit TV series?
Disney CEO Bob Iger made it a priority to bring Oswald back to the Walt Disney Company. The company then was able to acquire the trademark for the character in 2006.
The planned Oswald the Lucky Rabbit TV series will be written and produced by Favreau for Disney+. The director, also known for Elf and Zathura: A Space Adventure, wrote and executive produced The Mandalorian and also served as an executive producer for The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Favreau also directed Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action/photorealistically animated remake of The Jungle Book. He is the director behind the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for release in May 2026. The film will see the return of Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin.
Favreau is arguably best known for directing the first two Robert Downey Jr.-led Iron Man features for Marvel Studios.
