After the live-action trailer for The CW’s Powerpuff Girls series was recently leaked, fans of the iconic animated series have shared their thoughts about the scrapped project. The show was in development for three years before The CW ultimately decided to cancel it in May 2023.
The canceled Powerpuff Girls was written and executive produced by Heather Regnier (iZombie) and Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body). The story would have centered around the titular trio as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having spent their entire childhood fighting crime and struggle to reunite when the world needs them more than ever. The cast included Chloe Bennett as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as Jojo, and Robin Lively as Sara Bellum.
How did the Powerpuff Girls fans react to the live-action trailer?
The leaked trailer for the Powerpuff Girls series received mixed reactions from fans online, with some criticizing the network and the creative team for even considering adapting the beloved show into live-action without staying faithful to its source material.
The Powerpuff Girls deserved better than this, why would they mock them like this. https://t.co/JDDKXv21m0 pic.twitter.com/yXixZrJPhN

Fire who ever for a split second thought this Powerpuff Girls live action would have even be 1% successful. https://t.co/J8MnNEekT8 pic.twitter.com/RWimtERkrr
This is so awful. Thank you to whatever God made sure this died. And may it stay dead forever. And everyone who thought “great idea!” doesn’t continue to work.

And hearing the “hurr durr the cartoon white washed us hurr durr” was way more offensive than just reading about it. https://t.co/HcLmA3FTbS pic.twitter.com/AIXtI31OG1
How do you take an iconic cartoon villain like Mojo Jojo, turn him into two white dudes and split the name?!?

Who at The CW thought this was a great idea, like I knew The PowerPuff Script was ass BUT NOT THIS ASS ?? pic.twitter.com/I14b0Xp59m
Meanwhile, some fans felt like the show’s premise had potential if it was only handled by the right creative team. Several fans also expressed disappointment over the show’s cancellation, revealing that they would have watched it because of how silly the show was.
So glad they pulled the plug on this. The premise of "adult Powerpuff girls that are disillusioned with their superhero childhood" isn't a bad concept by itself and could have been done really well – but holy shit this is god-awful. https://t.co/8Ied4WZ8g9

okay call me crazy but as awful as this looks i still think they shouldve released it. i just dont like when countless artists' hard work goes down the drain, and let's face it everyone wouldve watched it out of morbid curiosity https://t.co/y9LFR8sKPz

The Powerpuff girls CW live action show is so insultingly bad that it's brilliant. This could've been The Room of TV shows. https://t.co/bhwp5FaeoX pic.twitter.com/WAr5HsfIDu

The only wholesome part of this entire trailer. Imagine if we had a kid friendly show of the Powerpuff girls fighting crime and stuff, would've been dope asf. They had the perfect opportunity to do something awesome.

It could've been like shark boy & lava girl, or spy kids. Omg https://t.co/Ps6W42bkZb pic.twitter.com/WqQx71wgV7
The original animated series was created by Craig McCracken and debuted in 1998, centering on Professor Utonium who, in an attempt to create the perfect little girl, ends up creating the titular trio Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup from the combination of sugar, spice, everything nice, and the mysterious Chemical X.
