Why The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Season 2’s Release May Not Happen

The Walking Dead TV universe’s Chief Content Officer (CCO), Scott M. Gimple, recently updated fans on the possibility of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live returning for a second season. In a recent interview, he confirmed that the show began as a limited series but left the door open for Rick Grimes and Michonne to return. Meanwhile, fans continue to speculate about potential crossovers, character reunions, and the expanding Walking Dead universe.

The Walking Dead CCO on The Ones Who Live Season 2’s release possibility

In an interview with The Direct at the Multicon red carpet, Scott M. Gimple stated that “the plan was to keep [The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live] limited,” but did not rule out a future return for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). He emphasized that while the show was intended as a limited series, “you never know,” hinting at potential appearances of the characters in future projects.

Gimple expanded on this, suggesting that the universe of The Walking Dead could see unexpected developments. He noted, “There’s so many… I’ve been very careful to not say, ‘Oh, that’ll never happen,’ because it does. So, you know, there are possibilities.” He also mentioned that various iterations and Walking Dead spin-offs could bring back characters from The Ones Who Live alongside other familiar faces from this zombie-filled universe.

The first season of The Ones Who Live concluded with Rick and Michonne reuniting with their family, providing a seemingly final resolution to their arc. However, their story could continue in a way that maintains narrative integrity. Some fans have speculated that a second season could explore long-awaited reunions with other original characters, such as Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon. But if that doesn’t happen, then Rick and Michonne could also return in other shows.

A major point of discussion has been whether Rick and Michonne’s return could serve as a final chapter for The Walking Dead universe. Many have suggested that Daryl’s eventual reunion with Rick would be a fitting way to close the franchise. While Gimple has not confirmed a second season, his comments indicate that future crossovers in other shows remain a strong possibility.
