Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, and features the death of a major character in the early moments of Episode 1. While the death has a lasting impact in the narrative, showrunner and executive producer Dario Scardapane revealed in a new interview that it happened off-screen in the original version of the script.

Daredevil: Born Again showrunner on Foggy Nelson’s death
Scardapane disclosed in an interview with ScreenRant that the original script of Daredevil: Born Again before he boarded the project had Elden Henson’s Franklin “Foggy” Nelson die off-screen. He called Nelson’s death an “inevitability,” adding, “Truth be told…In the original version, before I came in, he had died, but it was off-screen, and for me, it couldn’t be off-screen.”
Scardapane explained why it was important to show Foggy’s death. “You had to feel it and that’s why that statement happened literally,” he said. “It’s like [if] you’re going to kill off Foggy, it has to be the three of them [who] come back,” he added.
According to Scardapane, Foggy’s loss had to be felt by the viewers. He continued, “… that loss has to be an earthquake. That shatters Matt, [it] makes him put away the mask, [it] has a ripple effect.”
Foggy is Matt’s partner at their law firm and his best friend. He is killed in the opening sequence of Daredevil: Born Again after Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter / Bullseye shoots him. Grieving and vengeful, Matt throws Dex from the rooftop of a building and gives up being Daredevil.
Scardapane also revealed during the same interview that it was Charlie Cox who suggested the idea that Matt should have “Foggy’s heartbeat in his ear the entire time.”
Both Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat promised that this wasn’t the last time viewers had seen Foggy in Daredevil: Born Again. This is in line with what Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s TV, Streaming, and Animation head, stated in a recent interview, revealing that Henson and Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page, are returning for the sophomore season.
