Voice actor and comedian George Lowe, best known for portraying the role of Space Ghost on the animated series Space Ghost Coast to Coast, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 67.
Lowe’s passing was initially announced by Will Harris, who shared the news on Bluesky. In a Facebook post, Lowe’s longtime friend and radio host “Marvelous” Marvin shared that Lowe had passed away “after a long illness” and paid tribute to the star.
“I’m beyond devastated. My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness,” Marvin wrote in his post. “A part of me had also died. He was a supremely talented Artist and Voice actor. A true warm hearted Genius. Funniest man on Earth too. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine. He was also the voice of Space Ghost and so much more. Pweeloto.”
Lowe began doing voiceover work for TBS throughout the late 1980s-early 1990s and really took off in 1994, when he starred as Space Ghost. The show lifted the Space Ghost character (which was previously a Hanna-Barbera cartoon) and placed him as the host of a talk show, where he’d interview real-life guests.
The show was one of the first original series produced for Cartoon Network. In total, the series ran for 11 seasons, with over 109 episodes airing across Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and GameTape from 1994-2008.
Outside of Space Ghost, Lowe provided his voice to countless other Cartoon Network and Adult Swim projects. The actor had appearances on shows like The Brak Show, Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Perfect Hair Forever, Robot Chicken, Squidbillies, Celebrity Deathmatch, and more. His last performance was on the Max animated comedy Jellystone!, where he portrayed Space Ghost in a cameo appearance.
ComingSoon extends its condolences to the family and friends of Lowe at this time.
