Crazy Rich Asians TV Show in Development at Max From Jon M. Chu

Max has officially started developing a Crazy Rich Asians TV shows based on Kevin Kwan’s hit book series of the same name. This comes after seven years since the theatrical release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ film adaptation of Kwan’s 2013 novel, which starred Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh.

Who is involved in the Crazy Rich Asians TV show?

The Crazy Rich Asians TV show will feature the return of the movie’s director, Jon M. Chu, and scribe Adele Lim, who are both serving as executive producers alongside Kwan. Lim is also set as the showrunner. Further details about its plot and characters are still under wraps. It is also unknown if the creative team would bring back some cast members from the film.

At the moment, it is unclear what this project means for Warner Bros.’ long-gestated Crazy Rich Asians sequel, to be based on the second book in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians novel trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend. In 2022, it was reported that Chinese-Australian writer Amy Wang was tapped as the new writer, replacing the first film’s scribes Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim.

The first installment was a huge success for the studio, with a worldwide gross of over $230 million, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy film of the 2010s. In addition to its commercial success, the 2018 movie was also an instant hit among critics, with a Certified Fresh rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actress for Wu and Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.
