Waller Update: Viola Davis DCU Show Not Coming Soon

It may still be a while before DC fans get to see the DCU Waller series.

In 2023, James Gunn announced a number of forthcoming DCU movies and television shows. One of these projects was a The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker spin-off series, titled Waller, focused on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller character.

While a number of other DCU projects have had forward momentum since then, as Creature Commandos has already been released and Superman now arrives in theaters this July, there’s been little news about Waller.

Per Variety, Gunn has now given an update on the Waller show.

What is the update for the DCU Waller series?

Gunn briefly said that Waller has had a “bumpy road” during the pre-production process. Variety’s article notes that the show is currently “struggling to land the right script.”

Christal Henry was tapped to write and executive produce the series, while Gunn and Peter Safran are also serving as executive producers. Henry and Jeremy Carver were also announced to be the series’ co-showrunners.

Waller was originally supposed to arrive in 2024; however, production was delayed in 2023 and Peacemaker Season 2 instead was prioritized.

Gunn said of the show when it was announced in 2023, “This is a story of Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis. Viola Davis is going to team up with members of Team Peacemaker, and this is a story that’s been created by Christal Henry, who did Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver, who created the Doom Patrol. It is a fantastic story that is out of this world and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

No release date for Waller has yet been announced. Peacemaker Season 2, meanwhile, is expected to premiere in August 2025. The first season of Peacemaker, as well as Gunn’s The Suicide Squad movie, are both currently streaming on Max.
