Games of Thrones vet Sean Bean has officially signed on to join the Robin Hood cast for MGM+‘s upcoming series adaptation of the classic English tale. This marks Bean’s latest TV project, since starring in the final season of Snowpiercer last year. He will be portraying the Sheriff of Nottingham, who is a villain previously played by Matthew Macfadyen in the 2010 Ridley Scott movie and by Ben Mendelsohn in the 2018 Otto Bathurst movie.
The official character description for the Sheriff reads, “This vision of the Sheriff of Nottingham is unique: a statesman, a strategist, and a builder of Nottingham itself. A loving father, a politician, and cousin to King Henry II. He navigates the dangerous tides of power, facing not only an outlaw in the woods but also the ambitions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Norman Barons that surround him. Cunning and pragmatic, he is a man who rules with an iron hand, not out of cruelty, but an unshakable belief that the law, as Normans see it, must be preserved.”
Who will lead the Robin Hood cast?
MGM+’s Robin Hood will be led by former football player Jack Patten, as he takes on the titular role of the legendary folk hero. This marks the Australian actor’s TV acting debut. Prior to starring in the upcoming drama, he will first star in the action sci-fi thriller War Machine with Alan Ritchson, Jai Courtney, and Dennis Quaid.
Described as a modern take on the classic folk tale, the 10-episode series is written and executive produced by showrunner John Glenn and Jonathan English, with the latter also set to servie as a director. It is executive produced by Todd Lieberman for Hidden Pictures, with Carly Elter and Nicole Bryant overseeing the project. It is a production by Lionsgate Television.
“Following the Norman invasion of England, Rob – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord – fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land,” reads the official logline.
