The Penguin Showrunner Clarifies Batman’s Absence

While HBO’s The Penguin series featured a plethora of masterful performances from seasoned actors such as Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, it did not include an appearance from Robert Pattinson’s Batman. Two months after its finale, showrunner Lauren LeFranc has come out to address the Caped Crusader’s absence from the miniseries.

‘Batman can’t be everywhere,’ says The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc

In a recent discussion, the renowned television writer revealed that Robert Pattinson’s Batman failed to impact The Penguin series in person, as the character is neither omnipresent nor possesses any superhuman ability.

While talking to Empire Magazine, Lauren LeFranc highlighted, “What Matt reiterated to me early on is that it’s a big city, and Batman can’t be everywhere. He doesn’t have a Spidey sense that tingles. But just because we don’t see Batman in our show doesn’t mean he’s unaware or uncaring.” (via ComicBook)

Nevertheless, LeFranc did confirm that the consequences of the Penguin’s actions in the series will reverb around Gotham City, enough to grab the attention of Batman. “The events that have taken place in Gotham City, and the repercussions that come with them, will carry into the next film,” she noted.

Meanwhile, Colin Farrell has already confirmed that the Penguin will have around “five or six scenes” in Pattinson’s upcoming Batman sequel. The movie is currently on track to begin production sometime later this year. While The Batman – Part II was initially scheduled for an October 2026 release, the film has now seemingly been delayed till 2027. James Gunn himself denied the claims suggesting that Matt Reeves had completed the scripting phase for the project during a Threads discussion.

Additionally, plot details regarding the much-awaited sequel continue to remain under wraps. Albeit, Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Farrell’s Penguin will definitely lock heads in Reeves’ forthcoming DC project, set to hit theatres on October 1, 2027.
