Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s Hudson Thames Feared Series Would Be ‘Woke’

The lead voice actor in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Hudson Thames, seemingly had some doubts about how the tone of the series would turn out. The show recently premiered its first two episodes on Disney+ and will follow a unique release pattern for its remaining chapters. While a consensus opinion from fans has yet to form around the animated series, Thames appears to be content with the show’s writing. However, the voice actor recently revealed that he was concerned about how the series would be received.

Hudson Thames says Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man isn’t ‘annoying and woke’

In a recent discussion, the voice actor for Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Hudson Thames, expressed his thoughts on the writing in the series and mentioned that he was worried that it would be “annoying and woke.”

Speaking with Collider‘s Mike Thomas, the voice actor was asked about his thoughts on being a part of a new Spider-Man series. Thames stated, “I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”

Created by Jeff Trammell, the animated series shows the origins of the wall-crawling superhero. Hudson Thames is the voice of Peter Parker in the series, who is still in high school when he takes on the mantle of Spider-Man. However, in this alternate timeline, Colman Domingo’s Norman Osborn becomes a mentor to Parker, as opposed to Tony Stark in the MCU.

Before joining the voice cast of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Hudson Thames voiced the iconic web-slinger in the MCU’s What If…? series. He will now reprise his role in the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which will have 10 episodes.
