Bryan Andrews talks What If…?’s future beyond Season 3
Marvel’s What If…? concluded its third season, billed as the final installment, but director Bryan Andrews suggests this may not be the definitive end. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Andrews highlighted the potential for the series to continue, although no official plans have been confirmed.
“What makes it the right time to end it? I think that’s a question for the people way above my pay grade,” Andrews said. “They’ve got all types of plans that are brewing and all sorts of things. But I think there might be an invisible asterisk by it, because you could do these types of stories forever. You can just keep coming up with fun riffs.”
Andrews continued, “I think people are starting to get the hang of it. And they like the idea of telling a tale. They can sit down and open it up and just watch something fun and interesting. So yeah, there’s things going on in the MCU, maybe that’s why it’s a good time [to end it].”
Andrews further elaborated on the possibility of future What If…? projects, suggesting that the current conclusion might not be permanent. “None of this is official, but something in my gut tells me it might just be more of a pause for the time being, because it just feels like there’s other things we can tell,” he explained.
He also highlighted that while the overarching storyline involving The Watcher has reached a culmination, the anthology format of the series provides a framework for limitless storytelling. This flexibility leaves the door open for future explorations of alternate MCU realities, should the opportunity arise.
Currently, no official announcements for additional seasons or spin-offs have been made. Fans can revisit all three seasons of What If…?, which are available for streaming on Disney+.
