Sarah Michelle Gellar says ‘maybe’ on returning for Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

Busy promoting her new series Dexter: Original Sin, Sarah Michelle Gellar stopped by for a chat with Drew Barrymore. While the actress talked about a myriad of things, she expressed her thoughts on returning for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Talk Show, Gellar expressed that she has denied working on a reboot many times because she felt the show was “perfect.” However, she added that after “watching Sex and the City (sequel series, And Just Like That) and seeing Dexter (Original Sin), and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

Talking about whether a reboot of the series should be a prequel or a sequel, Gellar said, “It could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar previously expressed that she is not keen to return for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Per MovieWeb, while talking to SFX Magazine in 2022, she asserted, “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment.”

The show’s makers paused the reboot’s development in 2022. Albeit, in January 2024, Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer of the show, told Business Insider, “They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
