A new Prison Break series is coming to Hulu, as the streaming service has greenlit the pilot of a reboot. The first four seasons of the original series aired between 2005 and 2009, which were followed by a TV movie, The Final Break, debuting a few days after the Season 4 finale. In 2017, Fox brought back Prison Break as a revival series and aired its fifth season. There were even plans for Season 6, but they were ultimately scrapped.
Prison Break’s reboot sequel gets pilot order for Hulu
Hulu has given a pilot order to a Prison Break reboot from Elgin James, the co-creator of Mayans M.C. and The Outlaws. The reports about this series originally surfaced in November 2023. Back then, it was revealed that the new show would share a narrative universe with the original series. However, it would not revolve around existing characters and feature a new cast. This remains true following the recent updates. However, for now, the plot has been kept strictly under wraps.
Beyond the original show, there was a low-budget spin-off series, Prison Break: Proof of Innocence, which became available on SprintTV’s Fox station. In 2007, there was an attempt to develop a full spin-off series titled Prison Break: Cherry Hill, but it ultimately fell apart.
Notably, Wentworth Miller, the actor behind Michael Scofield, stated in a since-deleted Instagram post that he didn’t want to reprise the role again. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially. Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told),” Miller posted. The actor elaborated, “No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”
His co-stars from the show, including Dominic Purcell, who plays Michael’s brother Lincoln Burrows, and Sarah Wayne Callies, the actress behind Sara Tancredi, took to Instagram and showed their support.
