Creature Commandos Reviews Praise First Show in James Gunn’s DC Universe

The first reviews for Creature Commandos indicate that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU is off to a strong start.

Creature Commandos is a new animated series created by Gunn that serves as the first official DCU project. Featuring a voice cast that includes Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, and more, the first two episodes of Creature Commandos are scheduled to premiere on Max later this week.

What are the Creature Commandos reviews saying about the DCU series?

The first reviews for Creature Commandos have now come in and critics largely appear to be liking the series.

Looper’s Reuben Baron said that, while it “doesn’t quite rank as James Gunn’s best work” and that it’s “doing almost nothing new,” it’s an “adult cartoon monster mash” that is “an enjoyable time.”

GamesRadar+’s Lauren Milici compared the show to Batman: The Animated Series. They wrote, “I’ve spent most of my adult life chasing the high of BAS, wondering when something just as dark and daring would make its way onto my television screen – and Creature Commandos is close enough.”

IGN’s Tyler Robertson noted, “While it often feels like it’s teasing us with little details about what’s going on in the wider world of this fledgling DCU, Creature Commandos is never too bogged down in world-building to focus on telling a contained story. It’s elevated by a sense of cohesion: Everything comes together so satisfyingly, and every little detail feels like it really matters to the big picture – and the episodes remain light on their feet, fun, and entertaining. If this is the kind of quality we can expect from the new DCU, the future looks bright.”

Critics further praised the series’ animation and visual style, R-rated tone, and vocal performances.

The first two episodes of Creature Commandos will be released on Max on December 5, 2024. New episodes will continue to drop weekly until the finale airs on January 9, 2025.
