Peacemaker Season 1 Canon Status Clarified by James Gunn Ahead of DCU

James Gunn says that nearly everything that happens in Peacemaker Season 1 is canon to the forthcoming DCU; apart from one crucial scene, that is.

The first season of Peacemaker, which was created by Gunn, premiered in January 2022. A spin-off to 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the show’s initial outing was set within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which officially concluded with 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Gunn and Peter Safran are now creating a new DC continuity, the DCU, that officially kicks off next month with the animated Creature Commandos series.

Gunn has previously stated that Peacemaker Season 2 will be set in the DCU and will serve as a “soft reboot” of the series. He’s reassured fans that the timeline will make more sense once the new batch of episodes come out.

What from Peacemaker Season 1 isn’t canon to the DCU?

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn confirmed that the events of Peacemaker Season 1 will still indeed be canon to Peacemaker Season 2 and the larger DCU, though there is just one exception.

“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,” Gunn said.

During the Peacemaker Season 1 finale, members of the Justice League — including Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash — showed up for a brief moment near the end of the episode. The scene is played for laughs as the Justice League realizes they’re too late to assist in fighting the Butterflies, which then evokes anger from John Cena’s Christopher Smith.

How Peacemaker Season 2 will handle the appearance of the Justice League remains to be seen as it was previously announced that none of the stars of the 2017 ensemble movie (or the 2021 Zack Snyder cut) will reprise their roles in the DCU.

Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere in August 2025 on Max.
