Fan-favorite series Voltron: Legendary Defender is on the verge of being removed from Netflix, and the show’s team has now shared an update regarding its streaming fate. The series made its Netflix debut in 2016 to glaring reviews from critics and audiences alike. After eight seasons, it concluded its run in 2018. Fast forward six years, Netflix has announced that Voltron: Legendary Defender will be leaving the streaming platform. Reflecting on this surprise development, the team behind the acclaimed show has provided a statement to further clarify things for fans.
Voltron team on whether Legendary Defender could return to Netflix after leaving
The Voltron executives explained that the series’ license with Netflix is nearing its expiration date. Consequently, the animated drama will have to depart the streaming service in December, as per the current status quo.
The update regarding the series leaving Netflix was shared by Voltron’s team through their official Facebook page. “Voltron: Legendary Defender was not produced by Netflix. It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and licensed to Netflix. That license is expiring,” the post explained.
Aside from the disappointing news, the team also provided fans with a slight ray of hope. They revealed that Netflix and Voltron’s representatives are actively involved in renewing the license to facilitate the show’s return. “There is a chance the license gets renewed, those discussions are ongoing between all parties involved. If the license does not get renewed, DreamWorks is free to license VLD to another streaming platform,” the team stated.
While Voltron is extremely close to leaving Netflix, its first six seasons are said to be also listed on Amazon Prime Video. With Amazon MGM Studios also developing a live-action film with Henry Cavill, many fans have theorized that the show could shift to Prime Video post its Netflix exit.
However, the Voltron team has firmly debunked these speculations in their post. “The live-action film and the end of the contract to stream Legendary Defender are completely unrelated,” they added. “By coincidence, a film that has been in development for years is moving into production around the same time as the six-year terms of the Netflix contract are coming to an end,” the post further read.
At the time of writing, Voltron: Legendary Defender will officially leave Netflix on December 7, 2024.
