Author George R.R. Martin has his eyes set on a new story for whenever he finishes up on the highly anticipated sixth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that “one day,” he hopes to write a story based on the city of Braavos, a major city in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that houses the Iron Bank, the House of Black and White, and also features the Titan of Braavos, a gigantic fortress in the shape of a massive statue that stands at the foot of the island and guards its entrance.
What did George R.R. Martin say about a Braavos story?
Martin’s blog post is mostly about how the city is inspired by a variety of European locations, including places like Amsterdam. He also revealed that there were initial plans to create a television series that would act as a spin-off to HBO’s Game of Thrones, but ultimately it seemed like things fell apart.
“One of these days I need to write that story about Braavos we were developing for HBO,” Martin said. “They shelved that one a couple of years back, alas, but that does not mean I won’t go back to it… After Winds of Winter is done, of course. Maybe then I will have enough free time to visit Amsterdam again.”
Martin mentioning the spin-off series is the first time that anyone has said anything about the project’s development. However, it’s not the first Game of Thrones spin-off project to be in development before being canceled. The Long Night, a project that had its pilot episode filmed, was also canceled, as was a series called 10,000 Ships and a Game of Thrones sequel series centered around Jon Snow.
