Michael Newman Passes Away, Baywatch Star Was 68

Michael Newman, best known for his starring role in the hit series Baywatch, has died at the age of 68, according to those closest to him.

Newman’s close friend Matt Felker (who also directed the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun) confirmed to People that Newman had passed away on Sunday, and was “surrounded by his family and friends” at the time.

“I got to see Mike the last time he was conscious and he looked [at] me and in typical Mike fashion said, ‘You’re just in time,’ ” Felker said.

Newman came to fame during the 1990s, when he was a star in the hit action drama series Baywatch. Newman played a version of himself on the show and was actually a lifeguard in real life. Throughout his time on the show, Newman appeared in more than 150 of the show’s 241 total episodes. Outside of acting, Newman was also a full-time firefighter and continued in that field after Baywatch ended.

In 2006, Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and spent his time helping to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help those suffering from the disease and research for a cure. He also appeared in Felker’s docuseries, which featured many of the talent from Baywatch.

ComingSoon sends its condolences to Newman’s family and friends.
