The Old Man, the FX thriller drama series featuring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, is set to conclude its sophomore run this week. Although the network hasn’t officially greenlit the popular show for Season 3, Amy Brenneman, who stars as Zoe McDonald, recently gave a hopeful update on the subject.
Amy Brenneman says ‘it’d be odd’ if The Old Man Season 3 didn’t happen
In a recent interview, Brenneman stated that it would be “odd” if the series didn’t get a Season 3. She also revealed that series co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg envisioned it as a “three-act play.”
During her appearance on the Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, Brenneman said she didn’t know “if there’s gonna be a Season 3, but it would be kind of odd if there wasn’t just the way we [ended] with Season 2. But I know [Jonathan E.] Steinberg always saw this as a…he called it a three-act play. And so, we feel like Season 2 is in the middle of this really awesome story and where the characters are coming into their own in different ways.” (via The Direct)
The Old Man follows Dan Chase (Bridges), a former CIA operative and veteran of the Vietnam War. He finds himself entangled in a cat-and-mouse game with Harold Harper (Lithgow), FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence, after killing someone during a home invasion. Steinberg created the series with Robert Levine from Thomas Perry’s 2017 thriller novel of the same name. The inaugural season, comprising seven episodes, aired between June 16, 2022, and July 21, 2022. Shortly after, FX renewed it for Season 2, which consists of eight episodes and debuted on September 12, 2024.
In the same interview, Brenneman reflected on what sets The Old Man apart from previous TV projects. “I also think… having done now streaming and network, I mean… this feels like a movie,” the actress explained. “I mean this feels like Lord of the Rings doing three different– you know what I mean? It’s so beautifully plotted. The Judging Amys, and the Private Practices, and Shonda’s…you know…That’s just characters behaving. This is really like, ‘Oh, what’s happening in the story, right?’ And character tied to story,” she added.
Both the seasons of the show are available to stream on Hulu in the United States.
