Stephen King’s Fairy Tale Being Turned Into A24 Series, Paul Greengrass Attached

Stephen King’s Fairy Tale novel is being turned into a television series.

Fairy Tale was published in September 2022. Written by King, the novel follows a 17-year-old boy named Charlie Reade who finds himself in the middle of a war between good and evil after he is transported to a hidden realm.

Per Deadline, A24 is now adapting Fairy Tale into a ten-episode series.

What do we know about the Fairy Tale series?

Paul Greengrass originally wrote a script for a Fairy Tale adaptation and intended to turn it into a feature film. Greengrass is now expanding the script with J. H. Wyman, who will serve as the series’ showrunner.

Greengrass also serves as an executive producer on the series with Peter Rice, Wyman, and King. Greengrass may additionally be involved as a director, though this has not been confirmed at this time.

“Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load,” a description of the novel reads. “His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. King’s storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle.”

Greengrass is known for directing 2002’s Bloody Sunday, 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy, 2006’s United 93, 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, 2010’s Green Zone, 2013’s Captain Phillips, 2016’s Jason Bourne, 2018’s 22 July, and 2020’s News of the World. He’s currently working on a movie titled The Lost Bus, which will be released in 2025.

No casting or release date information is available at this time for A24’s Fairy Tale adaptation.
