Netflix is currently developing a brand new Pride and Prejudice series based on Jane Austen’s beloved 1813 novel of the same name. This comes after BBC recently announced a Pride and Prejudice spin-off centered around Mary Bennet.
This marks the latest TV adaptation of the classic romance drama, following the 1995 miniseries starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett. The streamer is also no stranger to adapting Austen’s works after previously releasing a movie adaptation of Persuasion in 2022 with Dakota Johnson leading the cast.
Who is involved in the new Pride and Prejudice series?
Netflix’s new Pride and Prejudice series will be written by Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton. At the moment, the project has no cast or director attached to it yet. The story follows the story of Elizabeth Bennet, an intelligent but stubborn young woman who finds herself falling in love with the wealthy and arrogant Mr. Darcy, despite having a negative first impression of him. Out of all the novel’s previous adaptations, the 2005 movie starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen has become the most popular one to date, with Knightley also earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
The novel’s official book synopsis reads, “Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighborhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth.”
