Bill Lawrence pitched Vince Vaughn’s Bad Monkey arc to span across Season 2 and 3

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bill Lawrence pitched the Bad Monkey arc to span across three seasons, with Vince Vaughn’s character, Andrew Yancy, at the center. Lawrence and Vaughn discussed their vision with Apple TV+, presenting a three-season character development plan that includes both redemption and recurring setbacks for Yancy. According to Lawrence, “When I pitched it [to Apple], I had a beginning, middle and end of a three-season arc for this character.”

Lawrence emphasized that the show’s tone was critical to its success. He described it as “banter-driven comedy, surrounded by surreal satire.” They aimed to maintain this tone throughout the seasons. Vaughn echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement to explore Yancy’s character. He noted, “It was so much not just good story, but great characters.”

Additionally, Lawrence hinted that the sequel to Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey novel, Razor Girl, could be adapted for season two, though this has yet to be confirmed. He shared that Carl Hiaasen “wanted to write a second book so that you could see Yancy on a journey to becoming a guy that doesn’t get in his own way when it comes to happiness.”

Lawrence and Vaughn remain committed to their three-season vision, hoping to further develop Yancy’s story while maintaining the unique balance of comedy, satire, and character growth that defines Bad Monkey. Vaughn expressed his eagerness for future seasons, saying, “I love the character, the world, the tone — all of it.”
