Aaron Pierre and Stephan James are both being eyed to play John Stewart in the DCU Lanterns series.
Lanterns is an upcoming DCU series that will star Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern Hal Jordan. The series will revolve around both Jordan and Stewart as they investigate a mysterious murder case.
Per Deadline, Pierre and James are both being eyed to play John Stewart in the series. No official offers have been made to either actor at this time. Damson Idris was also previously rumored to be in consideration for the role.
Pierre played Mid-Sized Sedan in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, which was released in 2021, and Caesar in Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad miniseries, which was also released in 2021. He recently starred as Terry Richmond in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, which is now streaming on Netflix, and is voicing Mufasa in Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King, which releases in December. He notably played Dev-Em in the DC Syfy series Krypton.
James, meanwhile, is known for playing Walter Cruz in Amazon Prime Video’s Homecoming. He has also starred in television series such as Degrassi: The Next Generation, Shots Fired, #FreeRayshawn, Surface, and Beacon 23, while his filmography includes 2014’s Selma, 2016’s Race, 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk, 2019’s 21 Bridges, and 2024’s Babes. He’ll soon be seen in The Piano Lesson, which releases this November.

Produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, Lanterns is written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Mundy will serve as showrunner, while Lindelof and King serve as executive producers.
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis for the show reads.
A release date for Lanterns has not yet been announced.
