More details regarding X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo’s firing have surfaced.
In March 2024, DeMayo was fired as head writer of X-Men ’97 after completing work on the first two seasons of the Disney+ series. Marvel did not give a reason for DeMayo’s firing at the time.
On Thursday, August 15, 2024, DeMayo alleged that his writing credit for X-Men ’97 had been stripped after he posted X-Men fan art on Instagram for Gay Pride. DeMayo wrote, “I’ll have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy. Stay tuned.”
Marvel responded in a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
What are the new details about Beau DeMayo’s firing from X-Men ’97?
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, DeMayo allegedly sent photos of himself to several young male staff members. The photos saw DeMayo in “various states of undress” while “wearing superhero costumes and striking sexually suggestive ‘hero’ poses that could be used as ‘inspiration’ for the show.”
DeMayo was reportedly asked to stop sending these pictures but continued to do so nonetheless.
Sneider also reports that DeMayo allegedly groped an assistant multiple times and was both emotionally and physically abusive to staff members.
“I’ve also heard that DeMayo was let go from Netflix’s The Witcher due to similarly troubling behavior,” Sneider’s article further notes. DeMayo’s executive producer credit is reportedly being removed from X-Men ’97 Season 2, while Marvel is in the process of rewriting the new season.
DeMayo has not responded to the allegations at this time. Following Marvel’s statement, DeMayo wrote on X, “The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, Marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.”
