An animated Blue Beetle series is in the works from DC Studios.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing an animated Blue Beetle series. Miguel Puga, who has been working on the project since early this year, will serve as the showrunner and director, while Cristian Martinez is the writer.
Who else is involved with the Blue Beetle animated series?
Angel Manuel Soto, who directed the 2023 Blue Beetle movie, will executive produce the series with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and John Ricard. Galen Vaisman will oversee the project for DC Studios.
The voice cast of the Blue Beetle animated series has not yet been officially announced; however, according to Deadline, “multiple” people have been approached, and “DC has received a positive response regarding returns.”
The series will reportedly build on the 2023 Blue Beetle movie and, should it be successful, could “potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug portrayed by Xolo Maridueña.”
Blue Beetle was released in United States theaters in August 2023. The film was part of the now-defunct DCEU; however, Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes is expected to appear in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU.
Along with Maridueña, the 2023 superhero movie starred Adriana Barraza as Nana, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes, Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo as Ignacio Carapax/OMAC, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, George Lopez as Rudy Reyes, and Belissa Escobedo as Milagro Reyes.
“Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab,” the synopsis for the movie reads. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he’s bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.”
The animated Blue Beetle series does not yet have a premiere date. Blue Beetle, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Max.
