Domhnall Gleeson is set to star in the The Office spin-off. Who better to ask for advice about joining that universe than Steve Carrell?
Carrell, who famously starred as Michael Scott on The Office, worked with Gleeson on The Patient. Because of their relationship, Gleeson called Carrell about The Office spin-off and asked for advice, mainly if he should do the gig.
In an interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Carrell called the Irishman an “excellent actor.” “He actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Did you enjoy it,'” Carrell told Fallon. “I said, “Of course.'” Carrell added that Gleeson is “great.”
What to expect in The Office Spin-off?
In May 2024, Peacock officially ordered The Office Spin-off from Greg Daniels and Michael Koman. The untitled mockumentary series is not a reboot. However, it will be set in the same universe as The Office. Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will lead the ensemble cast, which begins production in July.
The official synopsis from Peacock reads: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
The Office spin-off is executive produced by Daniels, Koman, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas (formerly Reveille).
Based on the BBC series of the same name, The Office ran for nine seasons from 2005-2013. The ensemble starred Carrell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and B. J. Novak. Carrell received six Emmy nominations and won one Golden Globe for his portrayal of Scott.
