A major X-Men ’97 Episode 10 easter egg referred to Avengers: Age of Ultron in a major way. While there were plenty of references for fans to pick up on in the finale, one of them ran a stark parallel with the second Avengers outing’s villain and final act.
X-Men ’97 Episode 10 easter egg sees Bastion using Ultron’s final plan
X-Men ’97’s unique big bad, Sebastion Gilberti, aka Bastion, took a couple of pages out of Ultron’s book. He saw himself as the future of planet Earth, similar to Age of Ultron’s AI-powered antagonist.
Ultron found humanity to be flawed and believed that true peace could only be achieved after its extinction. He created several bodies controlled with his tech-hivemind and designed Vision to be his final upgraded form. He became fascinated with meteors and turned Sokovia into one, which would have caused an extinction-level event for humans.
Ultimately, when Vision shut him out of the world’s network, he dropped Sokovia on Earth out of spite to kill millions. Fortunately, the Avengers managed to save the day before that could happen.
Similarly, X-Men ‘97’s human-sentinel hybrid villain planned to turn every human into a sentinel hybrid as well. Born from Nimrod’s technology, he saw the benefits of such a society and aspired to control it. But when the X-Men managed to sever his connection to the sentinels and hybrids in the finale, he lashed out and threatened to cause an Ultron-like extinction event.
While Ultron used Vibranium to give himself an upgrade, Bastion used Cable’s bionic arm to do so. As his final plan of attack, he wished to drop Asteroid M on Earth to kill every human on the planet. But in this universe, it was the X-Men who stopped Asteroid M from crashing down on Earth using Magneto’s help,
