Tomb Raider Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Tomb Raider Series From Phoebe Waller-Bridge Ordered at Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video has officially greenlit Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series.

According to a press release from Amazon Games, Prime Video is moving forward with Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series.

Waller-Bridge serves as a writer and executive producer on the series, which is based on the popular video game franchise and comes as a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

“With great IP, the possibilities are endless. The richness and depth of the fiction allows the Tomb Raider series from Prime Video and the video game from Amazon Games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft’s adventures,” said Amazon Games’ Christoph Hartmann. “We’re honored that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we’re looking forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.”

What do we know about the new Tomb Raider series?

Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series was first reported to be in development in January 2023. It is not yet known who will play Lara Croft in the series.

“Phoebe has a lifelong love affair with Lara Croft and as soon and very soon we’ll start the worldwide search for who will play this iconic role and I just can’t wait,” said Amazon MGM’s Jennifer Salke at an event on Tuesday, May 14, per Variety.

Waller-Bridge is best known for creating and starring in Fleabag, which premiered in 2016 and ran for two seasons. She was also a co-screenwriter on 2021’s No Time to Die, voiced L3-37 in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, and played Helena Shaw in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” she said. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

So far, there have been three live-action Tomb Raider adaptations. Angelina Jolie played the titular character in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life, while Alicia Vikander then starred in a 2018 remake directed by Roar Uthaug.

Netflix is also putting out an animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, later this year. Additionally, a ten-part animated series titled Revisioned: Tomb Raider was released in 2007.
