According to Deadline, Netflix has successfully won the rights to the coming-of-age series Calabasas in a bidding war against two major competitors. The project hails from executive producers Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts, who are currently co-starring in the latest season of American Horror Story.
What to expect in Calabasas?
“Calabasas follows Via, a 16-year-old sheltered Midwestern Catholic school girl whose world is turned upside down when her family moves and she’s forced to transfer to the fast world of Calabasas High where nothing is as it appears and where everyone is trying to be someone else. It’s a place where dreams come true . . . but not without complications and sometimes unforeseen consequences,” reads the synopsis.
Described as in the same vein as The O.C. and Beverly Hills 90210, Calabasas will be based on the Via Bleidner’s 2021 coming-of-age novella If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous. It is a collection of “funny and warmhearted stories” about Bleidner’s real-life high school experience during her time at Calabasas High. The series will be written and executive produced by Pretty Little Liars creator I. Marlene King, who’s also set as the showrunner. Executive producers are Alexandra Milchan, Lauren Wagner, Karah Preiss, and Matt Matruski.
