The Handmaid’s Tale star Madeline Brewer will be joining Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg in the fifth and final season of Netflix’s psychological thriller You, the streamer announced.
According to Netflix (via Deadline), Brewer is poised to join as a series regular and will portray Bronte — a character described as “an enigmatic and free-spirited playwright,” who will be the new employee at Joe Goldberg’s bookstore.
As the two bond over their shared interest in “literature” as well as their relative experiences with “loss,” Bronte brings up nostalgia for Joe and his old self, making him question the person he just turned into.
Known for starring as Janine Lindo in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Brewer has also appeared in several movies and television shows, including Orange Is the New Black, Hemlock Grove, Cam, The Ultimate Playlist of Noise, and Space Oddity. She is also set to star in the upcoming thriller Anniversary and the psychological horror movie I Live Here Now.
What will the final season of You entail?
While details about the fifth and final season remain under wraps, audiences can expect Season 5 to still follow the intensely obsessive Joe, whose obsession with the current woman he’s currently transfixed by can turn deadly.
A character who is willing to go above and beyond — even the extreme measures — Brewer’s character may also find herself as Joe’s newest obsession, presumably following in the terrible fates of Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Candace Stone (Ambyr Childers), Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), and Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle).
Based on the books by Caroline Kepnes, You — created by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble — also starred Carmela Zumbado as Delilah Alves, Jenna Ortega as Ellie Alves, James Scully as Forty Quinn, Shalita Grant as Sherry Conrad, Ed Speleers as Rhys Montrose, Lukas Gage as Adam Pratt, and more.
All four seasons of You are streaming on Netflix. No release window has been set yet for You Season 5.
