Shōgun Streaming Debut Scores Massive Global Viewership

Shōgun has accumulated promising viewership numbers during its streaming debut, Deadline reports. The premiere episode of the FX series has garnered a total of 9 million views globally in its first six days of streaming on Hulu, Disney+, and Star+. 

The show’s global viewership performance made it the company’s top series, even surpassing the first season of The Kardashians. Meanwhile, Disney (via Deadline) reported that the limited series went neck and neck with The Bear Season 2 in terms of being the top FX premiere. 

Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The creators also serve as the show’s executive producers, with Marks being the showrunner. Additional executive producers are Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, and Michael De Luca.

The official synopsis for Shōgun Season 1 reads as follows: “In Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war, Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.”

Who is in the cast of Shōgun? 

Apart from Cosmo Jarvis starring as John Blackthorne, Shōgun features a stacked list of Japanese stars, including Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, and Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba No Kata. 

The rest of the cast includes Tommy Bastow as Martin Alvito, Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu, Yuki Kura as Yoshii Nagakado, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, and Yuka Kouri as Kiku.

The first three episodes of the historical drama are now available to stream on Hulu and Disney+, followed by new episodes airing Tuesdays through April 23.
