HBO has renewed True Detective for a fifth season, with showrunner Issa López set to return to helm the new season following a successful fourth season for the company.
The renewal comes just a few days after HBO revealed that the series’ fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, became the show’s most-watched season in its history, with 12.7 million viewers across various platforms.
In a statement on the news, López said she was proud to be back and couldn’t wait to get back for Season 5.
“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
True Detective: Night Country was most popular entry in the series
In another statement, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO drama series and films Francesca Orsi praised López and Night Country.
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” said Francesca Orsi. “She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
True Detective: Night Country premiered in January and lasted six episodes. The series starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives stationed in Alaska. López served as showrunner, writer, and director of the series. Despite a divisive reaction from some fans, Night Country was widely praised by critics, and was the most successful season of the show in its history.
