Five-time Emmy winner Jean Smart is set to lead a limited series, which is currently developing, about a grandmother and her grandson during the final months of her life. Smart will also executive produce the comedy through her SmartAngel Entertainment banner with partner Angeliki Giannakopoulo.
What to know about Jean Smart’s new show
According to Deadline, the limited series is inspired by Kevin Hershey’s article “Love Letter: When My Grandmother Stopped Eating,” which was published in The New York Times. The adaptation is described as funny and poignant, centering on a grandmother (played by Smart) at the end of her life and her gay grandson.
In his twenties, the grandson reluctantly becomes her caretaker. He moves into her Catholic senior living facility, spending time with both traditional and hippie nuns. The search is currently underway for writers to pen the series.
Smart, well-known for her role as Charlene Frazier Stillfield in the sitcom Designing Women, has had several acclaimed television roles in recent years. She’s had prominent roles in Legion, Fargo, Watchmen, and Mare of Easttown. She also currently plays Deborah Vance in the Max comedy Hacks, which will return for season 3 later this year.
On the big screen, Smart recently appeared in Wildflower alongside Kiernan Shipka, Alexandra Daddario, and Dash Mihok, and in the Damien Chazelle film Babylon. Up next, the Hacks lead will star in the romantic comedy 42.6 Years opposite Andy Samberg.
