What is The Curse?
Created and written by Fielder, Showtime’s The Curse premiered on November 10, 2023. The bizarre, fictional series sees Fielder and Emma Stone play a married couple named Asher and Whitney Siegel, both of whom are trying to get a problematic New Mexico-based HGTV show, Flipanthropy, off the ground.
Safdie, meanwhile, plays a character named Dougie, who produces Asher and Whitney’s show.
“The Curse centers on Whitney and Asher Siegel, a newlywed couple struggling to bring their vision for eco-conscious housing to the small community of Española, New Mexico,” the official synopsis reads. “But, their efforts are complicated when an eccentrically flawed reality TV producer, Dougie, sees opportunity in their story. As the series unfolds, the couple find themselves caught in a mysterious web of ethical and moral gray zones – all while trying to keep their relationship afloat.”
The series also stars Barkhad Abdi, Hikmah Warsame, Nizhonniya Luxi Austin, Gary Farmer, Constance Shulman, and Corbin Bernsen.
Fielder is known for co-creating and directing Comedy Central’s Nathan for You, a comedy series that’s at least somewhat grounded in reality, in 2013. With Nathan for You having ended in 2017, Fielder then launched The Rehearsal, which is also very loosely based in reality, for HBO in 2022. The Rehearsal was renewed for a second season in August 2022.
