Eyes of Wakanda, a new animated series that serves as a spin-off to Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, is coming to Disney+ next year.
Marvel Studios held a special screening for the first two episodes of What If…? Season 2, hosted by ComicBook.com, on Monday, December 13, 2023. During the event, the studio officially announced an animated Eyes of Wakanda series was in the works and is expected to release on Disney+ in 2024.
“Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story,” the official description reads.
No other details about the upcoming series were given at the time. Marvel also announced that Spider-Man: Freshman Year was being renamed to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man during the event.
Black Panther and Wakanda’s MCU history so far
T’Challa/Black Panther made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War (which also introduced Wakanda to MCU fans for the first time). Based on the character by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and portrayed by Chadwick Baseman, T’Challa received his own solo film in 2018, which was directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler.
Boseman reprised his role in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame before he tragically passed away in 2020. He also voiced alternative versions of the character in the What If…? series.
In 2022, Coogler directed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which saw T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright) take on the mantle of Black Panther.
In February 2021, it was announced that Coogler was developing a new Disney+ Marvel further exploring the world of Wakanda. With there having been little news about Coogler’s series since its announcement, it’s not immediately clear if this project is Eyes of Wakanda or not.
Eyes of Wakanda releases on Disney+ in 2024. The second season of What If…?, meanwhile, premieres on December 22, 2023.
