Emperor of Ocean Park has cast a lead role for the MGM+ adaptation of Stephen L. Carter’s best-selling novel of the same name, with Grantham Coleman (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) portraying Talcott Garland. The actor also appears in the Netflix movie Rustin, per Deadline, and is a main character in the Starz drama Power Book III: Raising Kanan.
What’s Emperor of Ocean Park About?
The adaptation is set in the world of politics. The focus is on Ivy League academia and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. The story focuses on Talcott, a law professor who sees his quiet life shattered when his father dies of an apparent heart attack. That death is questioned by Tal’s sister, Mariah Denton, a former journalist and occasional conspiracy theorist that believes the Black Supreme Court nominee died because of foul play.
The cast also includes Jessica Jones alum Tiffany Mack as Mariah and Paulina Lule (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) as Kimmer Madison Garland, Tal’s wife. Madison’s a high-powered lawyer on the verge of being appointed a federal judgeship.
Sherman Payne, who wrote on Shameless, is set to serve as showrunner. Damian Marcano (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) is set to direct multiple episodes. It is produced by John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. John Wells, Sherman Payne, Damian Marcano, Shukree Tilghman, and JWP’s Erin Jontow are set to be executive producers.
