Julianne Nicholson will lead Dope Girls, described as BBC’s spiritual successor to Peaky Blinders. The Mare of Easttown and Ally McBeal star is joined in the ensemble by Eliza Scanlan (Sharp Objects), Umi Myers (Silent Witness), Eilidh Fisher (The English Game) and Geraldine James (Anne with an E)
What to know about Dope Girls
The series will delve into the history of a criminal underworld, following the birth of the nightclub scene in London’s Soho. Based on Marek Kohn’s non-fiction book of the same name, Dope Girls plans to mix elements of the fact-based research of Kohn’s book with fictional characters and storylines in order to explore the different aspects of the criminal world of Soho’s criminal world in the early 20th century. Per Deadline, filming on the project is currently underway.
The report also offers details about Nicholson’s character, Kate Galloway, a single mother who establishes a nightclub during what’s described as “the hedonistic uproar of post-World War I.” She embarks on a life of criminal activities with the goal of providing for her daughter Evie, who is played by Fisher.
The cast also includes Michael Duke (Get Up Stand Up), Ian Bonar (I May Destroy You), Laura Checkley (In My Skin), Will Keen (His Dark Materials), Fiona Button, Harry Cadby (Everything Now), Nabhaan Rizwan (Informer), Priya Kansara (Bridgerton), and Jordan Kouamé (Malpractice).
Bad Wolf is producing in association with its parent company Sony Pictures Television, which has international sales rights. Polly Stenham and Alex Warren are writing the show. Directors include Shannon Murphy and Miranda Bowen.
