House of the Dragon’s second season will air next Summer.
According to Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced at a press conference on Thursday, November 2, 2023, that House of the Dragon will return for a second season in the summer of 2024. A trailer for House of the Dragon’s second season was also shown to members of the media attending the event, though the footage has not yet been released online.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel series set 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. The first season, which consisted of ten episodes, premiered in August 2022 and was met with positive reviews, as it earned nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series.
What happened in House of the Dragon’s first season?
House of the Dragon, which is set over several decades, chronicles the rise and fall of the Targaryens. The first season ended with the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), an event that has caused House Targaryen to erupt into utter chaos as they have since tried to decide whether Prince Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) or Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) should take the Iron Throne.
HBO renewed House of the Dragon for a second season on August 26, 2022. Given that the new seasons’ scripts were finished prior to the start of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and most of the cast members are part of the Actors’ Equity, House of the Dragon Season 2 wrapped production in September 2023.
“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour,” Clare Kilner, one of the directors working on the series, told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2023. “Ryan’s decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”
